The1950s. The ‘City of Monza’ National Painting Prize

Giuseppe Uncini Progetto
After the Second World War, Italy was in motion again. Cities experienced a reborn desire for social life, to recover lost time by reknitting the threads of their own identity.

In Monza, the wartime pause had caused the interruption of the activities of the Musei Civici, recently established at the Villa Reale. In 1951, the Pinacoteca reopened and the need was felt for it to be enriched and brought up to date with the nascent national pictorial currents: thus the ‘City of Monza’ National Painting Prize was launched, whose winning works, selected by a select jury, were acquired by the Municipality for the civic collections.
